Varithena

What Is Varithena and How Does It Work?

Varithena (polidocanol injectable foam) is a prescription treatment for varicose veins caused by problems in the great saphenous vein (GSV) and its branches. It helps reduce symptoms and improve the appearance of affected veins. At Cellara Pain Institute, Varithena is injected directly into the damaged vein by a specialist. This minimally invasive procedure requires no incisions, and while the area is numbed, no general anesthesia is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Clinical studies show that Varithena significantly reduces symptoms like leg heaviness, swelling, aching, throbbing, itching, and irritation. Both patients and physicians often report visible improvement in vein appearance after treatment.

Varithena is injected into the damaged vein using a small catheter or needle. The foam fills the vein, causing it to collapse. Once the vein closes, blood is rerouted to healthier nearby veins, and the foam becomes inactive.

The procedure is done in under an hour and is typically performed as a same-day, outpatient visit. Patients can go home the same day.

Common side effects include mild leg pain for up to a week, bruising, swelling, skin discoloration, irritation, sore joints, and rare cases of deep vein blood clots. Inform your provider at Cellara Pain Institute if any side effects persist or worsen.

Varithena treats many types of varicose veins in the great saphenous vein (GSV) system, including twisted veins, veins above and below the knee, and those previously treated by other methods.

Some patients see results after one treatment, but additional sessions may be needed depending on vein size and number. Sessions are usually spaced at least five days apart.

You may resume light activities the same day. Avoid intense exercise temporarily. Walking 10–30 minutes daily and wearing compression stockings for two weeks is recommended.
