Varicose Vein

Veins in your body are essential for returning blood to your heart. When the valves inside these veins stop functioning properly, varicose and spider veins can develop. At Cellara Pain Institute we offer a variety of treatments for patients seeking solutions for varicose and spider veins.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are a common condition where veins close to the skin’s surface become swollen and twisted. These veins often appear dark purple or blue and may bulge out of the skin. The condition is thought to occur when weak or damaged vein walls or valves disrupt normal blood flow, causing the veins to enlarge and become more distorted. While varicose veins can develop anywhere in the body, they are most commonly found in the legs.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are a milder version of varicose veins that affect smaller veins. They often appear red or blue and resemble a spider web or tree branch in pattern. While spider veins are commonly found on the legs, they can also appear on the face. When they affect the face, factors like excessive sun exposure without protection, aging, excessive alcohol consumption, or facial injuries may contribute to their development.

Like varicose veins, spider veins are caused by similar underlying factors and, if left untreated, can potentially lead to health complications.

What Are Factors That Increase Your Risk Of Varicose Veins And Spider Veins?

It is estimated that 20% of all adults will experience varicose veins at some point in their lifetime. While both men and women can develop varicose veins and spider veins, these conditions are more common in women. Hormonal changes, such as those experienced during menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, or from taking oral birth control pills, are thought to influence vein wall health.

In addition to gender, other risk factors for varicose veins and spider veins include:

  • Age: As we age, wear and tear on the valves in veins that regulate blood flow can contribute to these conditions.

  • Genetics: If other family members have had varicose veins, it is more likely that someone will develop them as well.

  • Obesity: Extra weight places additional pressure on the veins, increasing the risk of varicose veins and spider veins.
