Image-Guided Injections
Facet Joint Injections & Radiofrequency Ablation
Facet joints are small stabilizing joints located at each segment of the spine. When these joints become arthritic or inflamed, they produce deep, aching back or neck pain that worsens with extension and rotation. Facet joint injections serve a dual purpose: they confirm the facet joint as the pain source (diagnostic) and deliver anti-inflammatory medication for relief (therapeutic). When facet-mediated pain is confirmed, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) can provide 6 to 18 months of relief by interrupting the nerves that transmit pain from the joint.
How It Works
- 1The suspected facet joint level is identified through clinical examination and imaging
- 2Under fluoroscopic guidance, a thin needle is placed directly into the facet joint capsule
- 3Contrast confirms intra-articular placement
- 4A small volume of anesthetic and corticosteroid is injected
- 5Your pain response confirms or rules out the facet joint as the source
Benefits
- Definitively identifies facet-mediated pain
- Provides immediate diagnostic clarity
- Therapeutic relief from joint inflammation
- Guides decisions about radiofrequency ablation for longer-lasting relief
Conditions This Treats
- Facet arthropathy
- Mechanical back pain
- Cervical facet-mediated headaches
- Degenerative disc disease
