EMG / Nerve Conduction Studies

30 to 60 minutes
No recovery needed; mild soreness at needle sites may last a few hours

Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are electrodiagnostic tests that evaluate how well your nerves and muscles are functioning. NCS measures the speed and strength of electrical signals traveling through your nerves, while EMG assesses the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction. Together, they identify nerve damage, its location, severity, and whether it is improving or worsening.

How It Works

  1. 1Nerve conduction: small electrical impulses are applied to the skin over specific nerves
  2. 2Sensors measure the speed and amplitude of the nerve's response
  3. 3EMG: a thin needle electrode is inserted into specific muscles
  4. 4Electrical activity is recorded at rest and during muscle contraction
  5. 5Results map the location and severity of nerve dysfunction

Benefits

  • Identifies the exact location and severity of nerve damage
  • Distinguishes between nerve and muscle disorders
  • Tracks nerve recovery or progression over time
  • Guides treatment decisions and surgical planning

Conditions This Treats

  • Radiculopathy
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Neuromuscular disorders
